نٓ وَٱلْقَلَمِ وَمَا يَسْطُرُونَ
Nūn. By the pen, and what they set down in lines,
Research verse 68:1 →
مَآ أَنتَ بِنِعْمَةِ رَبِّكَ بِمَجْنُونٍ
You are not, by the favor of your Lord, insane.
Research verse 68:2 →
وَإِنَّ لَكَ لَأَجْرًا غَيْرَ مَمْنُونٍ
And indeed, you will surely have a reward not cut off.
Research verse 68:3 →
وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ
And indeed, you are surely upon a tremendous way of conduct.
Research verse 68:4 →
فَسَتُبْصِرُ وَيُبْصِرُونَ
Then you will surely perceive, and they will perceive,
Research verse 68:5 →
بِأَييِّكُمُ ٱلْمَفْتُونُ
by which of you the one put to trial (is)
Research verse 68:6 →
إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِٱلْمُهْتَدِينَ
Indeed, your Lord is the most knowing of who has strayed from His path, and He is the most knowing of those who are guided.
Research verse 68:7 →
فَلَا تُطِعِ ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ
So do not obey the deniers.
Research verse 68:8 →
وَدُّوا۟ لَوْ تُدْهِنُ فَيُدْهِنُونَ
They wish that you would be accommodating, so they would be accommodating.
Research verse 68:9 →
وَلَا تُطِعْ كُلَّ حَلَّافٍ مَّهِينٍ
And do not obey every compulsive oath‑swearer, one who is despicable.
Research verse 68:10 →
هَمَّازٍ مَّشَّآءٍۭ بِنَمِيمٍ
A jabbering fault‑finder, walking about with tale‑bearing.
Research verse 68:11 →
مَّنَّاعٍ لِّلْخَيْرِ مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ
A relentless withholder of good, an overstepping wrongdoer.
Research verse 68:12 →
عُتُلٍّۭ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ زَنِيمٍ
Coarse, and after that, branded.
Research verse 68:13 →
أَن كَانَ ذَا مَالٍ وَبَنِينَ
because he was one possessing wealth and sons,
Research verse 68:14 →
إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ ءَايَٰتُنَا قَالَ أَسَٰطِيرُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
When Our signs are recited to him, he says, “Writings of the former ones.”
Research verse 68:15 →
سَنَسِمُهُۥ عَلَى ٱلْخُرْطُومِ
We will mark him upon the snout.
Research verse 68:16 →
إِنَّا بَلَوْنَٰهُمْ كَمَا بَلَوْنَآ أَصْحَٰبَ ٱلْجَنَّةِ إِذْ أَقْسَمُوا۟ لَيَصْرِمُنَّهَا مُصْبِحِينَ
Indeed, We have tested them just as We tested the companions of the garden, when they swore that they would surely strip it (of its produce) in the morning.
Research verse 68:17 →
وَلَا يَسْتَثْنُونَ
and they did not make any exception,
Research verse 68:18 →
فَطَافَ عَلَيْهَا طَآئِفٌ مِّن رَّبِّكَ وَهُمْ نَآئِمُونَ
So there encircled it a circling [calamity] from your Lord while they were asleep.
Research verse 68:19 →
فَأَصْبَحَتْ كَٱلصَّرِيمِ
So it became like the stripped-bare (field).
Research verse 68:20 →
فَتَنَادَوْا۟ مُصْبِحِينَ
So they called out to one another at early morning,
Research verse 68:21 →
أَنِ ٱغْدُوا۟ عَلَىٰ حَرْثِكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ صَٰرِمِينَ
“That: ‘Go early to your cultivated land, if you are ones who cut (it).’”
Research verse 68:22 →
فَٱنطَلَقُوا۟ وَهُمْ يَتَخَٰفَتُونَ
So they set off while whispering to one another,
Research verse 68:23 →
أَن لَّا يَدْخُلَنَّهَا ٱلْيَوْمَ عَلَيْكُم مِّسْكِينٌ
“that no needy person shall enter it upon you today.”
Research verse 68:24 →
وَغَدَوْا۟ عَلَىٰ حَرْدٍ قَٰدِرِينَ
So they went early, in a state of harsh resolve, [thinking themselves] able.
Research verse 68:25 →
فَلَمَّا رَأَوْهَا قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّا لَضَآلُّونَ
Then when they saw it, they said, “Indeed, we are surely astray.”
Research verse 68:26 →
بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ
No—rather, we are ones kept from it.
Research verse 68:27 →
قَالَ أَوْسَطُهُمْ أَلَمْ أَقُل لَّكُمْ لَوْلَا تُسَبِّحُونَ
Said the most balanced among them, “Did I not say to you, ‘If only you would glorify [your Lord]’?”
Research verse 68:28 →
قَالُوا۟ سُبْحَٰنَ رَبِّنَآ إِنَّا كُنَّا ظَٰلِمِينَ
They said, “Glory be to our Lord; indeed, we had been wrongdoers.”
Research verse 68:29 →
فَأَقْبَلَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ يَتَلَٰوَمُونَ
Then some of them turned toward others, reproaching one another.
Research verse 68:30 →
قَالُوا۟ يَٰوَيْلَنَآ إِنَّا كُنَّا طَٰغِينَ
They said, “O our woe! Indeed, we had been outrageous.”
Research verse 68:31 →
عَسَىٰ رَبُّنَآ أَن يُبْدِلَنَا خَيْرًا مِّنْهَآ إِنَّآ إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا رَٰغِبُونَ
It may be that our Lord will replace it for us with something better than it; indeed, we are ones who turn with longing toward our Lord.
Research verse 68:32 →
كَذَٰلِكَ ٱلْعَذَابُ وَلَعَذَابُ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ أَكْبَرُ لَوْ كَانُوا۟ يَعْلَمُونَ
Such is the punishment, and indeed the punishment of the Later (Life) is greater, if they had been knowing.
Research verse 68:33 →
إِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ جَنَّٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ
Indeed, for those who are mindful (of protection) there are, with their Lord, gardens of delight.
Research verse 68:34 →
أَفَنَجْعَلُ ٱلْمُسْلِمِينَ كَٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ
So shall We then make the ones who have surrendered like the criminals?
Research verse 68:35 →
مَا لَكُمْ كَيْفَ تَحْكُمُونَ
What is with you? How do you judge?
Research verse 68:36 →
أَمْ لَكُمْ كِتَٰبٌ فِيهِ تَدْرُسُونَ
Or do you have a written text in which you study?
Research verse 68:37 →
إِنَّ لَكُمْ فِيهِ لَمَا تَخَيَّرُونَ
That indeed, for you in it is only what you select.
Research verse 68:38 →
أَمْ لَكُمْ أَيْمَٰنٌ عَلَيْنَا بَٰلِغَةٌ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ إِنَّ لَكُمْ لَمَا تَحْكُمُونَ
Or do you have binding pledges upon Us, reaching to the Day of Resurrection, that indeed you will surely have whatever you judge?
Research verse 68:39 →
سَلْهُمْ أَيُّهُم بِذَٰلِكَ زَعِيمٌ
Ask them: which of them is a guarantor for that?
Research verse 68:40 →
أَمْ لَهُمْ شُرَكَآءُ فَلْيَأْتُوا۟ بِشُرَكَآئِهِمْ إِن كَانُوا۟ صَٰدِقِينَ
Or do they have associates? Then let them bring their associates, if they are truthful.
Research verse 68:41 →
يَوْمَ يُكْشَفُ عَن سَاقٍ وَيُدْعَوْنَ إِلَى ٱلسُّجُودِ فَلَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ
A Day when a shank is laid bare, and they are called to the prostration, but they will not be able.
Research verse 68:42 →
خَٰشِعَةً أَبْصَٰرُهُمْ تَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌ وَقَدْ كَانُوا۟ يُدْعَوْنَ إِلَى ٱلسُّجُودِ وَهُمْ سَٰلِمُونَ
Their eyes humbled, abasement enveloping them, while they had indeed been called to prostration when they were sound.
Research verse 68:43 →
فَذَرْنِى وَمَن يُكَذِّبُ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ سَنَسْتَدْرِجُهُم مِّنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
So leave Me with the one who denies this discourse; We shall draw them on, step by step, from where they do not know.
Research verse 68:44 →
وَأُمْلِى لَهُمْ إِنَّ كَيْدِى مَتِينٌ
And I will grant them respite; indeed, My stratagem is strong.
Research verse 68:45 →
أَمْ تَسْـَٔلُهُمْ أَجْرًا فَهُم مِّن مَّغْرَمٍ مُّثْقَلُونَ
Or do you ask them for a payment, so that they are weighed down by a liability?
Research verse 68:46 →
أَمْ عِندَهُمُ ٱلْغَيْبُ فَهُمْ يَكْتُبُونَ
Or is the unseen with them, so they are writing (it) down?
Research verse 68:47 →
فَٱصْبِرْ لِحُكْمِ رَبِّكَ وَلَا تَكُن كَصَاحِبِ ٱلْحُوتِ إِذْ نَادَىٰ وَهُوَ مَكْظُومٌ
So endure for the judgment of your Lord, and do not be like the companion of the fish when he called out while he was choked-inward.
Research verse 68:48 →
لَّوْلَآ أَن تَدَٰرَكَهُۥ نِعْمَةٌ مِّن رَّبِّهِۦ لَنُبِذَ بِٱلْعَرَآءِ وَهُوَ مَذْمُومٌ
If not that a favor from his Lord had overtaken him, he would surely have been cast out upon the bare open [ground] while he was one blamed.
Research verse 68:49 →
فَٱجْتَبَٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ فَجَعَلَهُۥ مِنَ ٱلصَّٰلِحِينَ
So his Lord selected him and thus made him among the ones who are soundly set aright.
Research verse 68:50 →
وَإِن يَكَادُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لَيُزْلِقُونَكَ بِأَبْصَٰرِهِمْ لَمَّا سَمِعُوا۟ ٱلذِّكْرَ وَيَقُولُونَ إِنَّهُۥ لَمَجْنُونٌ
And indeed, those who have denied almost make you slip with their eyes when they hear the Reminder, and they say, “He is surely mad.”
Research verse 68:51 →
وَمَا هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ لِّلْعَٰلَمِينَ
And it is nothing but a reminder for all communities.
