عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ
He frowned and turned away
Research verse 80:1 →
أَن جَآءَهُ ٱلْأَعْمَىٰ
because the blind man came to him
Research verse 80:2 →
وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُۥ يَزَّكَّىٰٓ
And what makes you realize that perhaps he may attain purification?
Research verse 80:3 →
أَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰٓ
Or he may take heed, and the reminder would benefit him.
Research verse 80:4 →
أَمَّا مَنِ ٱسْتَغْنَىٰ
As for the one who deems himself self-sufficient,
Research verse 80:5 →
فَأَنتَ لَهُۥ تَصَدَّىٰ
then you turn toward him eagerly
Research verse 80:6 →
وَمَا عَلَيْكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ
And there is nothing upon you that he does not purify himself.
Research verse 80:7 →
وَأَمَّا مَن جَآءَكَ يَسْعَىٰ
And as for the one who came to you, hurrying,
Research verse 80:8 →
وَهُوَ يَخْشَىٰ
while he is in awe.
Research verse 80:9 →
فَأَنتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهَّىٰ
yet you are being diverted away from him.
Research verse 80:10 →
كَلَّآ إِنَّهَا تَذْكِرَةٌ
Not at all! It is indeed a reminder.
Research verse 80:11 →
فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ
So whoever wills may remember it.
Research verse 80:12 →
فِى صُحُفٍ مُّكَرَّمَةٍ
in scrolls, honored,
Research verse 80:13 →
مَّرْفُوعَةٍ مُّطَهَّرَةٍۭ
raised, purified
Research verse 80:14 →
بِأَيْدِى سَفَرَةٍ
in the hands of radiant envoys,
Research verse 80:15 →
كِرَامٍۭ بَرَرَةٍ
noble, devotedly-righteous
Research verse 80:16 →
قُتِلَ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ مَآ أَكْفَرَهُۥ
Ruined is the human being—how intensely he covers [the truth]!
Research verse 80:17 →
مِنْ أَىِّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقَهُۥ
From what thing did He create him?
Research verse 80:18 →
مِن نُّطْفَةٍ خَلَقَهُۥ فَقَدَّرَهُۥ
From a sperm-drop He created him, then proportioned him.
Research verse 80:19 →
ثُمَّ ٱلسَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُۥ
Then the path He made easy for him,
Research verse 80:20 →
ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُۥ فَأَقْبَرَهُۥ
Then He caused him to die, and so He granted him burial.
Research verse 80:21 →
ثُمَّ إِذَا شَآءَ أَنشَرَهُۥ
Then, when He wills, He brings him out (again).
Research verse 80:22 →
كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقْضِ مَآ أَمَرَهُۥ
No indeed! He has not yet fulfilled what He commanded him.
Research verse 80:23 →
فَلْيَنظُرِ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِۦٓ
So let the human being look at his food,
Research verse 80:24 →
أَنَّا صَبَبْنَا ٱلْمَآءَ صَبًّا
that We have poured the water, pouring it forth,
Research verse 80:25 →
ثُمَّ شَقَقْنَا ٱلْأَرْضَ شَقًّا
then We split the earth with a splitting,
Research verse 80:26 →
فَأَنۢبَتْنَا فِيهَا حَبًّا
So We caused to grow in it grain,

وَعِنَبًا وَقَضْبًا
and grapes and cut herbage
Research verse 80:28 →
وَزَيْتُونًا وَنَخْلًا
And olive trees and date‑palms
Research verse 80:29 →
وَحَدَآئِقَ غُلْبًا
and gardens, imposing
Research verse 80:30 →
وَفَٰكِهَةً وَأَبًّا
and fruit and pasture-growth
Research verse 80:31 →
مَّتَٰعًا لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَٰمِكُمْ
As a provision for you and for your livestock.
Research verse 80:32 →
فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلصَّآخَّةُ
Then when the shattering cry comes,
Research verse 80:33 →
يَوْمَ يَفِرُّ ٱلْمَرْءُ مِنْ أَخِيهِ
The Day when the human will flee from his brother,
Research verse 80:34 →
وَأُمِّهِۦ وَأَبِيهِ
and his mother and his father,
Research verse 80:35 →
وَصَٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَبَنِيهِ
And his companion and his sons,
Research verse 80:36 →
لِكُلِّ ٱمْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ شَأْنٌ يُغْنِيهِ
For every person among them, on that Day, there will be a concern that occupies him.
Research verse 80:37 →
وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ مُّسْفِرَةٌ
Faces, that Day, will be glowing.
Research verse 80:38 →
ضَاحِكَةٌ مُّسْتَبْشِرَةٌ
Laughing, exultant.
Research verse 80:39 →
وَوُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَيْهَا غَبَرَةٌ
And [other] faces, that Day, upon them is dustiness,
Research verse 80:40 →
تَرْهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ
A murkiness will press upon them.
Research verse 80:41 →
أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْكَفَرَةُ ٱلْفَجَرَةُ
Those are the ones who cover [the truth], the ones who burst out in excess.
