Fire kindled, light given: نار and وقود
ٱلنَّارِ ذَاتِ ٱلْوَقُودِ
al-nāri dhāti l-waqūd — the fire possessing fuel
In the verses given, fire (nār) is never self-subsistent: it is kindled (awqada, istawqada), fed by fuel (waqūd), and can be extinguished, while light (nūr) appears as what the fire yields or what stands apart from it—even, in 24:35, almost giving off brightness before fire touches its source.
The two roots are bound together as a process: in the verses given, fire exists only as something kindled and fueled. The root w-q-d supplies the verbs and nouns of ignition—ٱسْتَوْقَدَ نَارًا 'sought to kindle a fire' (2:17), أَوْقَدُوا۟ نَارًا لِّلْحَرْبِ 'kindle a fire for war' (5:64), يُوقِدُونَ عَلَيْهِ فِى ٱلنَّارِ 'kindle upon in the fire' (13:17), تُوقِدُونَ 'you are kindling' (36:80)—and the fuel itself: وَقُودُهَا ٱلنَّاسُ وَٱلْحِجَارَةُ 'its fuel is people and stones' (2:24, 66:6), وَقُودُ ٱلنَّارِ 'the fuel of the Fire' (3:10), ذَاتِ ٱلْوَقُودِ 'possessing fuel' (85:5), ٱلْمُوقَدَةُ 'the kindled (one)' (104:6). What the pairing does is make fire contingent: it must be lit, fed, and can go out—أَطْفَأَهَا ٱللَّهُ 'Allah puts it out' (5:64), and its light can be taken away—ذَهَبَ ٱللَّهُ بِنُورِهِمْ 'Allah went off with their light' (2:17). The n-w-r root splits into two nouns: nār, the kindled fire, and nūr, the light it sheds or that exists independently. Verse 2:17 plays the two against each other: the kindled fire 'gave light to what was around him' (أَضَآءَتْ), and what is removed is their nūr, leaving darknesses. Verse 24:35 sharpens the contrast: the lamp 'is kindled' (يُوقَدُ) from a tree whose oil 'almost gives off brightness, even if fire has not touched it' (وَلَوْ لَمْ تَمْسَسْهُ نَارٌ)—light here precedes fire—culminating in نُورٌ عَلَىٰ نُورٍ 'light upon light'.
