A messenger raised among them: two framings
بَعَثَ فِيهِمْ رَسُولًا مِّنْ أَنفُسِهِمْ يَتْلُوا۟
baʿatha fīhim rasūlan min anfusihim yatlū — raised up among them a messenger from their own selves, reciting
Two verses give the same report of a messenger reciting, refining, and teaching the Book and the wisdom, but frame it differently: (3:164) presents it as a favor bestowed on 'the believers', while (62:2) presents it as an act of the One who raised it among 'the ummiyyīn'.
The two verses share an almost identical core: a messenger raised up among a group, from among themselves, who recites His signs to them, refines them, and teaches them the Book and the wisdom, while they had previously been in error. The differences are concentrated in the framing. (3:164) opens with 'Allah has indeed bestowed [a gracious] favor upon the believers when He raised up among them...' — the verb manna ('bestowed a favor') names the whole event as a favor, and the emphatic la-qad asserts it. The recipients are 'the believers' (active participle, masculine plural), and the messenger is 'from their own selves' (min anfusihim). (62:2) instead opens with a relative clause, 'He is the One who raised up among the ummiyyīn a messenger from among them' (minhum), with no verb of favoring and no emphatic particle; the recipients are named by the noun al-ummiyyīn. The closing clause also differs in wording: 'evident error' (ḍalālin mubīn) in (3:164) against 'manifest straying' (ḍalālin mubīn in the translation as 'manifest straying') — the Arabic of both endings is identical (لَفِى ضَلَٰلٍ مُّبِينٍ), so the difference lies only in the English rendering. Context reinforces each framing: (3:164) follows a statement of ranks (3:163) and precedes a question about misfortune answered 'from your own selves' (3:165), while (62:2) stands between an opening declaring Allah's glory (62:1) and a mention of others who have not yet joined them (62:3).
Where it occurs
- 3:164 Names the raising of the messenger as a favor bestowed upon the believers, asserted emphatically, with the messenger 'from their own selves'.
- 62:2 Reports the same raising as an act of the One who did it among the ummiyyīn, with the messenger 'from among them', without the favor-verb.
