al-jinn and al-ins as a fixed pair

al-jinni wa-l-insi — the jinn and humankind
Across ten verses, al-jinn and al-ins recur as an inseparable pair addressed, judged, created and punished together, so that the two kinds form a single audience of moral responsibility; only 6:128 separates them, and that separation itself shows their interaction.
In the verses given, al-jinn and al-ins function as a fixed pair. The pair is directly addressed as one audience in the vocative yā-maʿshara al-jinni wa-l-insi in (6:130) and (55:33); the same vocative structure appears in (6:128), where the jinn alone are addressed about their dealings with humankind. The pair also shares a single fate: communities 'of the jinn and humankind' enter the Fire together in (7:38), the divine statement becomes binding on communities 'of the jinn and humankind' in (41:25) and (46:18), and many of both are said to have been brought forth for Hell in (7:179). The pair is created by the one God for a single purpose in (51:56): 'I did not create the jinn and humankind except so that they serve [Me]'. In (41:29) both kinds are named as sources of those who lead astray, and in (27:17) both appear together, with the birds, as Solomon's gathered forces. Read side by side, the occurrences show something no single verse states on its own: the two kinds are consistently treated as one moral community — addressed together, warned by messengers 'from among you' (6:130), created for one purpose (51:56), and judged together (7:38; 41:25; 46:18). The one verse that splits the pair, (6:128), is also the one that describes interaction between the two kinds — 'some of us enjoyed [benefit] through others' — so the pair's separation there presupposes the pairing elsewhere.
Where it occurs
- 6:128 The pair is split: the jinn are addressed alone as having 'greatly multiplied [your share] of humankind', and their close associates from humankind speak, describing mutual benefit between the two kinds.
- 6:130 The pair is addressed together as one assembly that received messengers 'from among you' and bore witness against itself.
- 7:38 The pair names the communities of both kinds that have passed away and enter the Fire.
- 7:179 The pair names the many brought forth for Hell, described as having hearts, eyes and ears that do not function.
- 27:17 The pair, with the birds, makes up Solomon's gathered forces.
- 41:25 The pair names the communities that had passed away before them among whom the statement became binding.
- 41:29 The pair names the two sources of those who led astray, whom the deniers ask to see.
- 46:18 The pair names the communities that had passed away before them, upon whom the statement became binding.
- 51:56 The pair is the direct object of creation, created for a single purpose of service.
- 55:33 The pair is addressed together as one assembly challenged to pass through the extremities of the heavens and the earth.
