Surah Al-A'raf (7:164)

وَإِذْ قَالَتْ أُمَّةٌ مِّنْهُمْ لِمَ تَعِظُونَ قَوْمًا ٱللَّهُ مُهْلِكُهُمْ أَوْ مُعَذِّبُهُمْ عَذَابًا شَدِيدًا قَالُوا۟ مَعْذِرَةً إِلَىٰ رَبِّكُمْ وَلَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَّقُونَ

And when a group among them said, “Why do you admonish a people whom Allah is one who destroys, or one who punishes with an intensely severe punishment?” They said, “As an excuse before your Lord, and so that they might become mindful (protect themselves).”
