ṭawʿan wa-karhan: willingly and unwillingly
طَوْعًا وَكَرْهًا
ṭawʿan wa-karhan — willingly and unwillingly
The pair ṭawʿan wa-karhan appears four times, always marking that Allah's claim holds regardless of consent: whoever is in the heavens and the earth yields or bows lowly to Him, willingly and unwillingly, the heaven and earth were summoned with the same alternatives at creation, and even human spending is commanded "willingly or unwillingly"—only to be refused.
The expression is an accusative pair of opposites—ṭawʿan, "willingly," and karhan, "unwillingly"—used as a qualifier on a verb of submission or compliance. In (3:83) it attaches to aslama: to Allah "has yielded whoever is in the heavens and the earth, willingly and unwillingly," in a rhetorical question that presses whether anyone can seek judgment other than Allah's. In (13:15) the same universal scope—"whoever is in the heavens and the earth"—is stated with yasjudu in lowliness, again "willingly and unwillingly," and extended even to their shadows. In (41:11) the pair becomes a direct command at creation: Allah says to the heaven and the earth, "Come, willingly or unwillingly," and they answer, "We have come, willingly"—the only occurrence where the unwilling option is answered and declined. In (9:53) the pair shifts to human spending: "Spend—willingly or unwillingly—it will never be accepted from you," where the choice is offered only to be declared irrelevant, since acceptance depends on something else entirely. Read together, the occurrences show a consistent structure: the pair is addressed to beings under an inescapable claim. Whether one yields willingly or not, the yielding occurs; what willingness cannot change is the fact of submission itself. Even where acceptance is at stake (9:53) it is refused in both modes, on another ground altogether—the addressees' deviation. The alternation between wa ("and") in 3:83 and 13:15 and aw ("or") in 9:53 and 41:11 tracks this: the "and" verses state both modes as jointly true—as a yielding already made (3:83) and a lowliness that simply holds (13:15)—while the "or" verses present a choice, here notably a choice whose second branch is never taken up.
Where it occurs
- 3:83 Qualifies aslama: all in the heavens and the earth have already yielded to Allah, in both modes, as a premise for rejecting any judgment other than His.
- 9:53 Offers both modes of spending as equally futile: acceptance will not come whether the spending is willing or forced.
- 13:15 Qualifies yasjudu in lowliness: all beings in the heavens and the earth bow lowly to Allah in both modes, with their shadows included.
- 41:11 Forms the terms of a creation command to the heaven and the earth, whose answer—"We have come, willingly"—picks only the first term.
