Iblīs's boast: fire over clay
قَالَ أَنَا۠ خَيْرٌ مِّنْهُ خَلَقْتَنِى مِن نَّارٍ وَخَلَقْتَهُۥ مِن طِينٍ
qāla anā khayrun minhu khalaqtanī min nārin wa-khalaqtahu min ṭīn — He said, “I am better than him; You created me from fire, and You created him from clay.”
Iblīs's answer to God's question is word-for-word identical in (7:12) and (38:76), while the divine questions that precede it differ; the fixed boast shows that his reasoning never changes, while the framing around it shifts what his reply fails to answer.
The reply of Iblees is reproduced exactly in two passages. In (7:12) God asks, “What held you back from that you should not prostrate when I commanded you?” and Iblees answers with the boast. In (38:75) God asks a different question: “What held you back from prostrating to what I created with My two hands? Did you act arrogantly, or were you among those who are exalted?” — and (38:76) gives the same answer, word for word. The identical reply does two different things in each setting. Against (7:12), it is a direct answer to “what held you back”: he states his reason, a comparison of materials — fire versus clay — presented as grounds for being “better.” Against (38:75), it is an evasion: God there offers him two alternatives (arrogance or exalted rank) and also names the object of prostration as something God Himself created “with My two hands.” Iblees's material comparison answers neither alternative and ignores the fact that the one he calls lesser is God's own handiwork. The consequences also differ in wording: (7:13) orders him to “fall down” and identifies him among “the diminished,” while (38:77) orders him to “get out” and calls him “one cast off.” Read together, the fixed boast against shifting questions shows a reasoning that does not adapt: the same hierarchy of substances is offered whether the question asks for his reason or challenges his standing.
Where it occurs
- 7:12 Iblees's stated reason for refusing: he ranks his own substance (fire) above Adam's (clay).
- 38:76 The same boast, but here it fails to answer the two alternatives God posed in (38:75) and overlooks that Adam was created by God's two hands.
