Messengers before you were denied
فَقَدْ كُذِّبَ رُسُلٌ مِّن قَبْلِكَ
fa-qad kudhdhiba rusulun min qablika — then indeed messengers before you were denied
Two verses console the addressee messenger with the fact that denial of messengers has precedent, but they frame that precedent differently: 3:184 states it as a general fact about unnamed messengers, while 35:25 ties the denied messengers to the deniers themselves as 'their messengers', and grounds the consolation in the claim of 35:24 that every community already received a warner.
Both verses respond to the same situation, denial of the addressee messenger, with the same argument: this has happened before. The shared core is the frame 'then indeed ... denied' — passive 'were denied' in 3:184, active 'denied' in 35:25 — followed by 'came/came to them with the clear evidences, and the writings, and the illuminating Book'. The differences are systematic. In 3:184 the denied ones are 'messengers before you' (رُسُلٌ مِّن قَبْلِكَ), an indefinite plural, and the verb is a passive (كُذِّبَ), so no deniers are named; the sentence simply states that messengers bearing clear evidences, writings and the illuminating Book were denied. In 35:25 the deniers are 'those before them' (ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ), the predecessors of those denying you, and the denied ones are 'their messengers' (رُسُلُهُم), possessive, who 'came to them' (جَآءَتْهُمْ). The denial is thus placed inside a chain: each generation denied the messengers sent to it. This fits the surrounding claim in 35:24 that 'there has never been any community but that a warner passed within it', and it sets up the consequence in 35:26: 'Then I took those who covered [the truth]; so how was My repudiation?'. In 3:184 the context is instead a demand for a sign (3:183), and the answer notes that messengers who did come with clear evidences and with what they demanded were killed (3:183) and still denied (3:184). The 35:25 wording also repeats the preposition ب before the second and third items (وَبِٱلزُّبُرِ, وَبِٱلْكِتَٰبِ), where 3:184 carries ب only on the first item (بِٱلْبَيِّنَٰتِ) and joins the other two directly (وَٱلزُّبُرِ وَٱلْكِتَٰبِ).
Where it occurs
- 3:184 Consoles the addressee with the fact that unnamed messengers before him, who came with clear evidences, writings and the illuminating Book, were denied.
- 35:25 Consoles the addressee by stating that the deniers' own predecessors denied, and that those predecessors' own messengers came to them with the same three things.
