You did not kill Them, but Allah Killed Them
فَلَمْ تَقْتُلُوهُمْ وَلَٰكِنَّ ٱللَّهَ قَتَلَهُمْ
fa-lam taqtulūhum wa-lākinna llāha qatalahum — So it was not you who killed them, but Allah killed them
In a single verse the verb qatala is negated of the human actors and then affirmed of Allah, and the same double structure is immediately repeated with ramā ('throw'), producing a paired mirror in which the identical action is denied of the addressee and credited to Allah.
Verse 8:17 contains two parallel mirror constructions built on the same pattern: a negated second-person verb followed by wa-lākinna + subject + the same verb. The first uses qatala: 'So it was not you who killed them, but Allah killed them.' The second uses ramā: 'and you did not throw when you threw, but Allah threw.' In each case the verse does not deny that the event occurred; it denies that the human party was its effective agent. The killing happened, the throwing happened — the second clause even concedes 'when you threw' — yet the verse relocates the action to Allah as its performer. The mirror is thus not a denial of the deed but a redistribution of agency: the same verb root (q-t-l: taqtulūhum / qatalahum; r-m-y: ramayta / ramā) is applied first to the addressees and then to Allah, with the subject and the negation changing — and in the first pair also the form, from the jussive taqtulūhum to the perfect qatalahum. The verse then states a purpose clause, 'so that He may subject the believers, from Himself, to a fine trial' (8:17), which frames the double mirror as serving a test of the believers, and closes with 'Indeed, Allah is Hearing, Knowing' (8:17), attributes consistent with the verse's concern with who truly acts. The pairing of qatala and ramā in one verse shows the construction functioning as a repeatable pattern rather than a one-off statement about a single event.
Where it occurs
- 8:17 The verse negates the killing of the addressee ('it was not you who killed them') and attributes it to Allah, then repeats the same structure with 'throw' ('you did not throw when you threw, but Allah threw').
