A thousand years (alf sanah)
أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ
alfa sanatin — a thousand years
In the five verses given, the fixed span 'a thousand years' serves as a measure on three distinct scales: a maximum human lifespan longed for, the duration of a messenger's stay among his people, and the measured span of a day in relation to Allah.
The noun phrase أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ ('a thousand years') appears five times in the verses given, and reading the occurrences side by side shows the same number doing three different kinds of work. In (2:96) it marks the outer limit of human longing: one of those who joined partners 'would love, if only he could be made to live a thousand years', and the verse immediately adds that being made to live will not move him away from the punishment. In (29:14) the same span is an actual duration: Noah 'stayed among them a thousand years, except fifty years'. In the remaining three occurrences the phrase measures a day, not a life: (22:47) states 'a day with your Lord is like a thousand years of what you count', while (32:5) says the command ascends to Him 'in a day whose measured span is a thousand years of what you count'. (70:4) extends the same construction fifty-fold: the angels and the Spirit ascend 'in a Day whose measured span is fifty thousand years'. Two features recur across the day-verses: the phrase مِمَّا تَعُدُّونَ ('of what you count') in (22:47) and (32:5), which anchors the comparison in the hearers' own reckoning, and the wording كَانَ مِقْدَارُهُ ('whose measured span is') in (32:5) and (70:4). The family thus shows a fixed quantity moving between the human scale of a wished-for lifespan, the narrative scale of a messenger's stay, and the divine scale of a single day.
