The sun and the moon as a created pair
ٱلشَّمْسَ وَٱلْقَمَرَ
al-shamsa wa-l-qamara — the sun and the moon
The Qur'an consistently names the sun and the moon together as a fixed pair among God's signs, created and subjected by Him, each with a distinct function and each running to an appointed term, so that together they serve calculation and mark His sole worthiness of service.
The Qur'an treats the sun and the moon as an established pair, nearly always named in that order and in the same grammatical form. They appear within larger created sets: with the night and the day (14:33; 16:12; 21:33; 31:29; 35:13; 36:40; 41:37), with the daybreak and the night (6:96), with the stars (7:54; 16:12; 12:4), or alone as a compact pair (10:5; 55:5; 71:16). Across these verses the pair does consistent work. They are created objects: God 'created the night and the day and the sun and the moon' (21:33). They are subjected: 'He has subjected for you the sun and the moon, tirelessly working' (14:33), 'made subservient by His command' (7:54). They serve a purpose for people: 'for calculation' (6:96), 'so that you may know the number of the years and the calculation' (10:5). They are bounded: 'each runs until a specified term' (31:29; 35:13), and each moves in its own orbit (21:33; 36:40). The pair also functions rhetorically in argument: even the addressees, whom the verse says are 'turned away', will admit He created and subjected them (29:61), and the verses explicitly forbid prostrating to either body while commanding prostration to their Creator (41:37). The pair is thus a compact unit of evidence: created, subordinated, useful, and limited, pointing to the One who commands them.
Where it occurs
- 6:96 Presents the pair as made 'for calculation' within God's apportioning.
- 7:54 Lists the pair among the bodies 'made subservient by His command' after creation.
- 10:5 Distinguishes the two functionally: the sun as radiance, the moon as light with measured stages, for knowing years and calculation.
- 12:4 Uses the pair, with eleven stars, as figures in the vision Joseph recounts to his father, prostrating to him.
- 14:33 States the pair has been subjected 'for you... tirelessly working'.
- 16:12 Includes the pair among subjected things that are 'signs for a people who use their reason'.
- 21:33 Names the pair as created, each moving in an orbit.
- 29:61 Has even the addressees concede that Allah created the heavens and the earth and subjected the pair.
- 31:29 Pairs the subjected sun and moon, each running 'until a specified term', with God's awareness of deeds.
- 35:13 Contrasts the pair, running to a term under God's dominion, with those called upon apart from Him who own nothing.
- 36:40 Denies that the sun can catch the moon, each swimming in an orbit.
- 41:37 Makes the pair 'signs' and forbids prostrating to either, commanding prostration to their Creator.
- 55:5 States the pair compactly as 'by a reckoning'.
- 71:16 Assigns distinct forms: the moon a light within the heavens, the sun a lamp.
