Tuḥfat al-Arīb
تحفة الأريب بما في القرآن من الغريب
Abū Ḥayyān al-Gharnāṭī · 654–745 AH / 1256–1344 CE · Glossary of Qurʾānic gharīb
Tuḥfat al-Arīb is a glossary. For most roots it offers one line: a word as the Qur'an uses it, then a one- or two-word equivalent. Its author, the grammarian and exegete Abū Ḥayyān, meant to explain only the Qur'anic words that ordinary speakers of Arabic would not understand. It is quick to consult, but a gloss is often the sense a word bears in one unnamed verse; finding that verse is most of the art of reading it.
