Tāj al-ʿArūs
تاج العروس من جواهر القاموس
Murtaḍā al-Zabīdī · d. 1205 AH / 1791 CE · Commentary on al-Qāmūs
The Tāj al-ʿArūs is a dictionary built around another dictionary. Working in Cairo in the 1760s and 1770s, Murtaḍā al-Zabīdī took al-Fīrūzābādī's compressed al-Qāmūs al-Muḥīṭ and wove a running commentary through it, phrase by phrase: naming who gave a meaning, adding the verse or poem behind it, reporting disputes, correcting slips and supplying words the Qāmūs left out. Its entries interleave three voices: the Qāmūs, al-Zabīdī himself, and the many scholars he quotes.
