An Advanced Learner's Arabic-English Dictionary
H. Anthony Salmoné · preface dated 1889; published 1890 · Learner's Arabic–English dictionary
H. Anthony Salmoné, who lectured on Arabic at University College London, wanted to give students a dictionary that was "comprehensive, handy and cheap". The book he published in 1890 packs a whole root into one compact article: verbs, nouns, plurals, the prepositions a verb takes, and a run of English equivalents, classical and modern side by side. It quotes no poetry or scripture and names no authorities. It maps a word family quickly; it is no witness to what a word meant in the seventh century.
