An Arabic–English Lexicon
مدّ القاموس
Edward William Lane · published 1863–93 (Lane d. 1876) · Arabic–English lexicon
Edward William Lane spent thirty-four years putting the medieval Arabic dictionaries into English. The result is less a dictionary in the modern sense than a translated anthology: almost every meaning carries the initials of the book or scholar that reported it, Lane's own additions sit in square brackets, and small marks show whether a figurative sense was so labelled by an Arabic authority or only by him. Learn those signals and you can tell, line by line, which source Lane is reporting and where he speaks himself.
