al-Fīrūzābādī set out to make a very large dictionary small. By his own account he stripped out the illustrative quotations and the "superfluities" so that material planned for sixty volumes would shrink thirtyfold, and he wrote with al-Jawharī's al-Ṣiḥāḥ always in view, adding what it lacked and correcting what he thought it got wrong. The result is a dense run of forms and senses with most of the evidence cut away; using it well means knowing what was removed.
