Ibn Sīda wanted a dictionary a grammarian could trust. In eleventh-century al-Andalus he gathered what earlier lexicographers had scattered and re-sorted it with the tools of grammar: he tells a plural from a plural of a plural, names who reported rare forms, leaves out what grammar can predict, and now and then says "in my view".
