Al-Muḥīṭ is the plan of al-Khalīl's Kitāb al-ʿAyn filled with more words and less proof. Its compiler, a Buyid vizier, kept the ʿAyn's sound-based order and much of its wording, added words from later collectors, above all al-Khārzanjī, and sharply cut back the poetry the ʿAyn had used as evidence. The result is a dense inventory of recorded senses: wide, terse, and usually silent about where each sense came from.
