Al-Fayyūmī compiled this dictionary for readers of a law book: its title promises the difficult words of al-Rāfiʿī's Great Commentary on Shāfiʿī law. What it offers a reader of the Qur'an is more general — a compact teaching lexicon that fixes how a word is voweled, conjugated and pluralised, and, in a number of entries, says plainly that a word's meaning in the religious law, al-sharʿ, has narrowed from its meaning in the language.
